I spent hours just staring at pictures, trying to memorize every curve and line. I started to find a lot of resources from various stores, and I even found some discussions about remakes.
Next, I needed to find the parts. This was tricky. I scoured the internet, looking for watch parts that looked similar to the ones on the real Patek. I found some decent-looking hands and a dial that was kind of close. The case was the hardest part, but I eventually found one that was the right shape and size, even if it wasn’t the exact same material. I compared the prices for remakes, and I found some pretty good deals. People say it is a good deal, this remake.
Then came the assembly. Let me tell you, this was no walk in the park. I’m not a professional, just a guy who likes to mess with watches, so it was a lot of trial and error. I bent a few hands, scratched the case a couple of times, and almost lost a few screws. But I kept at it, slowly putting the watch together piece by piece. It was like a puzzle, and I was determined to figure it out. I knew from the start that I could not expect a masterpiece, but still, I wanted to do my best.
Finally, after weeks of work, I finished it. My own, homemade version of the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. The movement was nothing special, just a basic automatic one I picked up online. And some of the details were a little off. But, you know what? It looked pretty darn good, at least to me.
